FAQs

Some FAQs (frequently asked questions) about Learning with MusicWorks. Feel free to get in touch at the bottom of this page if there is anything that these FAQs do not cover.

1. How long will it take me to learn to play the guitar?

Well it depends on what you consider to be playing the guitar. The answer would be just a few weeks or the rest of your life, both would be true. Learning with MusicWorks does however set you up with the best possible chance of feeling like you are actually succeeding and getting things, while enjoying the ride along the way. The truth is, you never stop learning and you never stop wanting to be better. If your idea of playing guitar is strumming some chords around a campfire while everyone sings traditional songs, then you'll be able to play in just a few weeks. If you want to master the instrument, you will work at it the rest of your life. Regardless of your expectations, rest assured as long as you're with MusicWorks you be constantly moving in the right direction and loving it!

2. What sort of Guitar should I buy?

This depends on a couple of things... Electric or acoustic, if we are talking about a child/student or an adult, if so then age and size are important, even personal preference should be taken into account. Both electric and acoustic guitars have advantages and disadvantages if you are just starting out. An electric guitar is easier to play but your endurance and finger strength is improved with the acoustic. Electrics generally are more expensive at the beginner level but when you get into pro-line guitars the cost is about the same. So what is the answer?.. well it depends on who is going to be playing it. With MusicWorks we understand everyone is different so we'll definitely put you right, get in touch and we'd be more than happy to answer any questions specifically relating to you, so you know you'll be getting the right advice.

3. How often should I practice?

This is a big question as ultimately what you are doing at home will determine whether or not you will have success in learning your instrument. Here is the good news though... This is a huge part of what sets MusicWorks apart from all the other lesson providers and teachers out there. The short answer is you should practice every day, around 30-60 minutes is a good goal. However the big issue is that we know just saying this DOES NOT WORK! with your lessons we will show you the right way to practice and all the methods behind practicing so that what you are working on not only improves, but lets you see results fast! This way with today's busy lifestyle you will actually be able to be getting to be where you want even with just 5-10 minute sessions at home.

4. Do I have to be able to read music

No. Good news right?! Though if you are learning the guitar you may want to as your musical journey continues. With MusicWorks you can rest easy knowing that what you are being taught is not designed to confuse and freak you out. We have a system and a method that works with you at whatever level you're at. What we do find though, is people usually do decide they want to start looking into what all those funny little music notes actually mean? Why does this happen? Well there comes a point where you are so excited with how things are going, and the fact things are actually making sense, that you actually look forward diving into stuff a little deeper. If you are learning piano or drums MusicWorks will teach you how to read music the right way and is sometime better if you can't read music yet...

Now if you are really keen to start learning to read proper music notation right from day-1, then we can also do that! Using our proven method you'll love your lessons and see real results.

5. Should I do 30, 45 or 60 minute Lessons? and how often?

If you are seeing MusicWorks privately and outside of a school, then this depends on how booked we are and also how much time you have. We do lessons Mon-Sat, but depending on the day and time we are looking at, lesson spaces fill up FAST! 1 hour lessons are probably best as we really can cover a lot of content and you'll leave feeling great about the week ahead, however a lot of students are doing absolutely amazing with just 30 minute lessons and have been doing so for the entire time they have been learning. The best plan is to have regular lessons once a week, but we do cater for those that wish for 2 lessons a week or once a fortnight.

For those lucky enough to have MusicWorks at your school, lessons are always 30 minutes long and are held once a week.

6. Do I need my own instrument?

Yes. Having your own instrument is important as that is what you will be using to play and practice with at home. We are honest in saying that if you do no playing in between our weekly lessons, you really will be wasting your, and our time.

For those having lessons at school we strongly recommend that you bring what ever you will be playing at home with you to your lessons (unless you are learning drums or piano)

If you are learning with MusicWorks out of school, you will find some Pro-Level instruments here in the studio. There will be times when you will be encouraged to play them, but to get the best out of our time together you really should be bringing your own instrument too.

7. What sort of music will I learn?

At school we will work through some amazing books and resources as well as learning a bunch of awesome songs from TV and the radio.

What we learn for people learning at the studio and out of our school lessons will largely depend on what you're passionate about and what makes you get that special feeling that you get when listening to a song that really speaks to you. No matter what your tastes are we have you covered. We will coach you on a bunch of things that you could say are generic, no matter what style your musical tastes are, but to give you an idea, this month, (which is pretty typical) students have been learning...

Top 40 radio songs, old school rock, Pop, classical pieces, blues, jazz, their own original songs, and even a bunch of TV theme songs.

8. How does payment work? and what happens if I forget a lesson?

Lessons are able to be paid for either by Cash, Cheque or via online banking.

School Lessons

Lessons are paid on a term by term basis. This is great as you are not required to commit to a whole year of lessons all at once. You will be invoiced at the beginning of each term with the amount owing based on how many weeks are in the current term. Students are expected to remember their lesson time as lessons are not refunded or credited due to a student being absent or forgetting etc. You will however be credited a lesson should your teacher be away for some unforeseen circumstance. Parents/caregivers are welcome to inform us at the beginning of each term should they know of a date or week that they are unable to attend lessons in the upcoming term. If MusicWorks are made aware if this prior to the fees being paid you will not be charged for that week of lessons.

Studio/Private Lessons

Lessons are paid weekly and 1-lesson in advance. One of the main goals of MusicWorks is that we make it as easy as possible for people to be able to do lessons and we find this works best. You are able to pay for a month etc if you wish, but most people just pay weekly. (it's kinda like how you often pay rent, 1-week in advance). Due to the fact lesson spaces are highly sort after, being 1-lesson in credit means that if you are not going to be able to make your lesson time, and we do not receive 24 hours notice this covers our cost.
